Waynflete School’s Sustainable Ocean Studies Program Receives Grant from Bristol Seafood

PORTLAND – Waynflete School’s Sustainable Ocean Studies (SOS) program has received an $8,000 grant from Bristol Seafood to support the summer program for students entering 11th and 12th grades, as well as recent graduates.

SOS is an inspiring and rigorous month-long program that is field-based, community-oriented, technology rich and focused on ocean sustainability. Through a blend of hands-on learning, fun and adventure, students explore the Gulf of Maine from Cape Porpoise to Stonington, and work directly with scientists, staff from the ocean-related organizations and government agencies, and those who depend on the ocean for a living. According to SOS Director David Vaughan, “Bristol Seafood will be an important resource for students in our efforts to understand all of the key aspects of a sustainable seafood industry.”

Bristol Seafood has said that it “is committed to being a good community citizen by providing annual funding to aid in education and research directed at the seafood industry.” As a major processor in New England, Bristol obtains supply from sustainable fisheries around the globe that will continue to provide Bristol and its customers with products into the future.

“Bristol Seafood has always supported funding directed towards ocean studies, and the Sustainable Ocean Studies program at Waynflete is a program worthy of our support,” said Bristol Seafood Vice President Darrell Pardy. “We applaud the School's effort to further the education and research of ocean studies and encourage others to participate and support it as well.”
